Tolox owns a singular limestone´s relief which causes spectacular formations in the nature like potholes, shelters and caves.
Since prehistory, caves have been used as a refuge for wild animals, from the weather or burials. It isn´t strange that those same chambers were used in the early twentieth century as home to people of Tolox who lived in full nature.
The village offers the opportunity to spend a day in the mountains, leaping backward over "a hundred years of history" in order to know the houses-caves where they lived, fields with their crops and crafts that developed in the mountains to survive.
Activities for a weekend or two days:
On First Day: Discovering Río Verde.
The itinerary starts with a 4x4 route. Along the way, all-terrain vehicles will stop some times in order to contemplate different types of relief and singular species of flora in the area. In addition, visitors will go collecting plants that will be used for the workshop the following day.
After the 4x4 route, visitors will walk along a path that leads to the Houses-Caves of Moorish. In this way, they will discover the relief, the fauna, the flora, the headwaters of the Río Verde or Green River, the reason why this area is important to their old residents and the houses-caves, caves that people used as a home or farmyards to protect livestock. In addition, people meet old trades as the work of the “miera” or learn to plant. Also, we will see in situ the “eras”, its construction and its operation; and the bread ovens.
Around noon, a country picnic was offered to visitors.
In the afternoon, the visitors are going to go spelunking into the bowels of the Cave of Río Verde.
If visitors want, they can cool off with a swim in one of the pools of Río Verde.
On the second day we will carry out a workshop for Esparto grass or Palm.
On the second day we will carry out a more affable activity. Esparto grass and palm workshop consists of the knowledge and learning of the work of making objects with Esparto grass and palm which are wild plant that grows in the Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve Sierra de las Nieves.
